The Mayor of Sofia visited BioMedRTC
Vassil Terziev visited IMB-BAS and was informed about the progress of BioMedRTC
The Mayor of Sofia Vassil Terziev visited the IMB-BAS and learned about the development of BioMedRTC
On May 25, 2026, the Mayor of Sofia Municipality Vassil Terziev visited the Institute of Molecular Biology "Acad. Rumen Tsanev" at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IMB-BAS) , where he was informed about the progress in the creation of the new research center BioMedRTC .
During the visit, the vision, main goals and key directions for the development of BioMedRTC were presented - a strategic project aimed at building a competitive research environment in the field of biomedicine and creating conditions for conducting scientific research at a high international level.
Particular emphasis was placed on the international partnership with leading European scientific organizations - Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Germany and Institut Curie in France , which will contribute to the exchange of knowledge, experience and good scientific practices and to the more active integration of Bulgarian researchers into the European scientific space.
Modern scientific infrastructure and opportunities for a new generation of researchers
BioMedRTC introduces two models of key importance for the development of a modern scientific environment.
One is the development of technological departments (core facilities) , which will provide access to modern technologies, methods and scientific infrastructure in the field of biomedicine for researchers and clinicians from Bulgaria and abroad.
The other is the creation of independent research groups led by young scientists , which will create opportunities for the development of the next generation of scientific leaders and for attracting and retaining highly qualified researchers in Bulgaria.
It is precisely the investment in human potential that is among the main focuses of the BioMedRTC concept. Regarding the project, Vassil Terziev emphasized the importance of young and independent scientific leaders, noting that "the future belongs to those who are knowledgeable and skilled"
Sofia Municipality supports the implementation of BioMedRTC
An important topic during the visit was the interaction between scientific organizations and local authorities in creating the necessary conditions for the development of modern scientific infrastructure in Sofia.
Sofia Municipality is assisting in the preparation and adoption of the Detailed Development Plan (DDP) of the BioMedRTC building – a key administrative prerequisite for the implementation of the project.
On this occasion, Mayor Vassil Terziev emphasized the importance of urban development in supporting science and projects of national importance:
"When urban planning works in the service of science, the city develops in the right way."
The visit was an opportunity to discuss the broader role of research and innovation projects in the development of Sofia as a city that attracts talent, knowledge, technology and investment.
According to Vassil Terziev, Sofia has the potential to be a driver of innovation in Europe, and projects such as BioMedRTC show that the capital can be a reliable partner and an attractive center for investments in knowledge.
"We continue to work for a city where science and talent find their fulfillment here, at home."
BioMedRTC – an investment in the future of biomedical research
The creation of BioMedRTC is an important step towards strengthening Bulgaria's scientific and innovation potential in the field of biomedicine.
By combining modern scientific infrastructure, international partnerships, access to high-tech methods and support for the development of young scientific leaders , the Center aims to create a sustainable environment for scientific research, collaboration and knowledge transfer.
The visit of the Mayor of Sofia to IMB-BAS was an opportunity to present both the progress of the project and the long-term vision for BioMedRTC as a research center of national and international importance , which will contribute to the development of Sofia and Bulgaria as an attractive place for science, innovation and highly qualified specialists.
About the project
Project BG16RFPR002-1.008-0001 BioMedRTC is implemented with the financial support of the Research, Innovation and Digitalization for Smart Transformation Program 2021–2027, co-funded by the European Union.
The project is aimed at developing research and innovation capacity in the field of biomedicine, building a modern scientific infrastructure and creating a competitive environment for conducting scientific research at a high international level.
