Dr. Stoyno Stoynov presented BioMedRTC on the Bulgarian National Radio

Among the topics discussed were the new research and technology center BioMedRTC, the opportunities for the development of young scientists and the construction of modern infrastructure for biomedical research

Dr. Stoyno Stoynov presented BioMedRTC on the Bulgarian National Radio

In the program "Afternoon for the Curious" on the "Hristo Botev" program of the Bulgarian National Radio, Dr. Stoynov spoke about the creation of BioMedRTC and the new model of scientific research environment that the Center aims to develop in Bulgaria.

His participation was part of a special program dedicated to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences – its development from the Bulgarian Literary Society to the modern Academy, the new directions in the scientific activity of the BAS and the contribution of its institutes to society, economy and the technological development of the country.

Five new scientific groups for cancer and rare disease research

Before the listeners of the Bulgarian National Radio, Dr. Stoynov presented one of the main goals of BioMedRTC - the creation of five new independent scientific groups which will work in the field of biomedical research with a focus on cancer and rare diseases.

Funding amounting to EUR 30 million has been provided for the construction and development of the research and technology center under the Research, Innovation and Digitalization for Smart Transformation Program, co-funded by the European Union.

Particularly important is the model for the development of new scientific groups, which creates the opportunity for young researchers to build their own scientific team and work independently in a modern technological environment.

The selection of the leaders of the new groups will be carried out with the participation of an international advisory board of recognized scientists, which will contribute to the international nature and high scientific standards of the procedure.

Five technology groups and access to modern technologies

Along with the independent scientific groups, BioMedRTC also envisages the creation of five technology groups , through which modern technologies and specialized scientific infrastructure will be available to the scientific community.

This model aims to expand the opportunities for the use of modern biomedical technologies by researchers in Bulgaria and to create an environment for cooperation, exchange of expertise and conducting scientific research at a high international level.

Thus, BioMedRTC will combine the development of independent scientific teams with high-tech research infrastructure, creating conditions for both conducting its own scientific research and supporting the broader scientific community.

New building for BioMedRTC

During the discussion, Dr. Stoynov also presented the plans for the construction of a new BioMedRTC building, which will provide the necessary environment for the development of scientific and technological groups and for the deployment of the new research infrastructure.

The new building is expected to be completed in 2028–2029.

Building the infrastructure is an important part of the long-term vision for BioMedRTC – creating a competitive environment for biomedical research in Bulgaria that attracts talented scientists and provides the setup for their professional and scientific development.

BioMedRTC as part of the modernization of Bulgarian science

Dr. Stoynov's participation was part of the broader discussion on the Bulgarian National Radio about the development and modernization of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The program presented various examples of scientific and innovation initiatives of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences - from the renovation of scientific infrastructure and the development of centers of excellence and competence to technology transfer, interaction with business and policies to support young researchers.

In this context, BioMedRTC is an example of a new generation of scientific infrastructure that combines investment in modern technologies with that in human potential and creates conditions for the development of independent scientific leaders in Bulgaria.

The creation of BioMedRTC aims not only to expand the opportunities for conducting high-quality biomedical research, but also to contribute to the building of a sustainable scientific environment, in which Bulgarian and international researchers can develop new ideas, scientific partnerships, and innovative solutions.

About the project

Project BG16RFPR002-1.008-0001 "BioMedRTC" is implemented with the financial support of the Research, Innovation and Digitalization for Smart Transformation Program 2021–2027 , co-funded by the European Union.

The project is aimed at developing research and innovation capacity in the field of biomedicine, building a modern scientific infrastructure and creating a competitive environment for conducting scientific research at a high international level.
